What to expect when we meet

Taking the first step towards counselling can feel both hopeful and uncertain.

Many people tell me they felt nervous before their first appointment. You may be wondering what to expect, what you'll be asked, or whether you'll have to tell your whole story straight away.

Please know that there is no "right" way to come to counselling.

You are welcome exactly as you are.

Before Your Appointment

Once you've booked your appointment, you'll receive a welcome email with everything you need to know before we meet.

This includes:

  • your appointment details
  • a brief client information form
  • informed consent and privacy information
  • payment information
  • directions to the practice (or your telehealth link if meeting online).

If completing the paperwork feels difficult, that's okay. We can go through it together during your appointment if needed.

When You Arrive

My hope is that from the moment you arrive, you'll feel welcomed into a calm and respectful space.

We'll spend the first few minutes settling in and making sure you're comfortable.

If it's your first experience of counselling, I'll explain how our sessions work, answer any questions you may have, and talk through confidentiality so you know what to expect.

Our First Conversation

Our first session is simply a conversation.

There is no expectation that you tell your whole story or remember every detail.

We'll begin wherever feels right for you.

Together, we might explore:

  • what has brought you to counselling
  • what life has been like recently
  • the support you currently have around you
  • what you hope counselling might provide
  • any questions or concerns you have.

We will move at a pace that feels comfortable for you.

It's Okay If…

Many people worry about how they will be in counselling.

Please know that all of the following are completely okay.

  • It's okay if you cry.
  • It's okay if you don't cry.
  • It's okay if you don't know where to begin.
  • It's okay if you need time to think.
  • It's okay if you laugh.
  • It's okay if your feelings seem confusing or contradictory.

You don't need to have everything figured out before you arrive.

Counselling is a Collaborative Process

Counselling isn't something that is "done" to you.

We'll work together to understand your experiences and explore what feels most helpful for you.

Some sessions may involve talking through difficult emotions. Others may focus on practical strategies, understanding grief, strengthening coping skills, or simply having a place where you don't have to carry everything alone.

How Often Will We Meet?

Every person is different.

Some people attend counselling for a short period during a difficult season, while others choose ongoing support.

Together, we'll regularly review your needs and decide what feels most helpful.

FAQs

How long is a session?

Sessions are approximately 60 minutes.

Will everything I say remain confidential?

Yes, with a small number of legal and ethical exceptions relating to safety, which we'll discuss together.

Can I bring someone with me?

You're welcome to discuss this with me before your appointment if it would help you feel more comfortable.

What if I become emotional?

There is no expectation to manage your emotions during counselling. This is a space where all feelings are welcome.

My Hope for You

I hope that when you leave your first appointment, you feel lighter—not because your grief has disappeared, but because you no longer feel you have to carry it alone.

Healing begins with feeling safe enough to share your story.

That first conversation is simply the beginning.

Ready When You Are

If you're considering counselling, know that there is no expectation for you to have the right words or know exactly what you need.

We'll begin together, one conversation at a time.

A Gentle Invitation

If you're reading this, there's a good chance life has changed in ways you never expected.

Perhaps you've been carrying more than most people realise.

Perhaps you've been the strong one for everyone else.

Or perhaps you're simply tired.

Whatever has brought you here, I hope you know this:

You don't need to earn support.

You don't need to wait until things get worse.

You don't need to have the right words.

You are welcome here.

Not sure where to begin?

Choosing the right counsellor matters. I invite all new clients to begin with a complimentary 15-minute telephone conversation so we can discuss what has brought you here and whether my practice is the right fit for your needs.
