FAQs

How long are counselling sessions?

Standard counselling sessions are approximately 60 minutes.

What happens during the first session?

Our first session is an opportunity for us to get to know one another. We'll talk about what has brought you to counselling, explore what you hope counselling may provide, discuss any questions you have, and begin wherever feels most comfortable for you. There is no expectation that you tell your whole story during the first appointment.

How many sessions will I need?

There is no set number of sessions. Some people attend counselling for a short period during a difficult season, while others choose longer-term support. Together, we will regularly review your needs and decide what feels most helpful.

Is everything I tell you confidential?

Yes. Your privacy and confidentiality are important. There are a small number of legal and ethical circumstances where confidentiality may need to be broken, such as where there is a serious risk of harm to yourself or another person, or where disclosure is required by law. These will be explained fully before counselling begins.

Do I need a GP referral?

No. You are welcome to contact me directly to make an appointment.

Are counselling sessions covered by Medicare?

At present, counselling provided by a PACFA Registered Clinical Counsellor is generally not eligible for a Medicare rebate.

Can I claim through my private health insurance?

Some private health insurers provide benefits for counselling, depending on your level of cover and the insurer's eligibility requirements. If you have private health insurance, I encourage you to contact your insurer to ask whether counselling with a PACFA Registered Clinical Counsellor is covered under your policy.

What if I've never been to counselling before?

Many people who come to Living Well Grief & Loss Counselling are attending counselling for the first time. It's completely normal to feel nervous or uncertain. You don't need to have the right words or know exactly where to begin. Our first session is simply a conversation, and we will move at a pace that feels right for you.

Do you offer online counselling?

Yes. Secure online counselling appointments are available for clients who prefer to meet from home or are unable to attend in person.

What if I become upset during a session?

Grief can bring many emotions, and all are welcome. You are free to laugh, cry, sit quietly or take your time. There is no expectation that you manage your emotions during counselling. My role is to provide a safe and supportive space where your experience can be explored with compassion and care.

Is counselling right for me?

Counselling may be helpful if you are:

  • struggling following the death of someone important
  • experiencing anticipatory grief
  • navigating separation or relationship loss
  • adjusting to a significant life transition
  • feeling overwhelmed by change or loss
  • simply looking for a safe place to talk with someone who understands grief.

If you're unsure whether counselling is right for you, please feel free to contact me. I'm happy to answer your questions before you book.
